How To Protect Your Business From Ransomware

What is Ransomware?

Ransomware is a form of malware that denies the victim access to their files by encrypting them. This form of malware then prompts the victim to pay a ransom to recover their data. Most ransomware spreads via email attachments and downloads from malicious websites. Ransomware started gaining notoriety back in 2013 with the release of CryptoLocker. Today new variants of ransomware still pose a serious threat to businesses.

Should we pay the ransom?

  • There is no guarantee that your files will get restored if you pay.
  • It could make you a target for future attacks.
  • It helps fund these criminals giving them more resources to perform these attacks.

For these reasons we never recommend paying the ransom.

My Files Got Encrypted Can You Get Them Back?

In some rare occasions it can be possible to decrypt the files without paying the ransom. It’s up to you if its worth trying but we recommend keeping secure backups instead.

Backup Your Files

Backups are the best way to defend against this type of attack. Having offsite backups that are not connected to the internet is ideal. If a hacker encrypts your system you can restore your files from your backup and won’t need to pay a ransom.

Train Employees

Most ransomware spreads through emails, malicious websites, and downloads. Train your employees to exercise caution when opening uninvited documents sent over email. They should only install applications from official sources. It’s also a good idea to use an ad blocker when browsing the internet.

Use a Dedicated Firewall

Your first line of defense against online threats. Make sure your Firewall is running the proper security services and stays up-to-date.

Use Anti-Malware Software

Use a good end point solution such as Malwarebytes. These applications can protect your devices before, during, and after an attack.

Stay Updated

All this technology can become useless if we allow it to fall behind. It is important to make sure your systems stay patched and up-to-date.
